"Paint the essential character of things" (-Camille Pissarro)

It's fun to see the differences that can be had with different papers, paints, and painting styles.  I painted these two images in the exact same paints, but I used watercolor paper in the first, (above,) and Yupo in the second (below.)

I was sketching while the power was out during Irene yesterday, and had fun experimenting with the way paints play on different surfaces.

The effects are quite different, aren't they?   Normally, I think the Yupo helps loosen me up, and I like the look of the oozy images I can conjure up using it, but this one seems kind of rigid to me.   I like the first painting here, on the traditional watercolor paper.    I'll have to do more of these; they're fun.

"Painting's not important.  The important thing is keeping busy."  (--Grandma Moses)

Amazing difference! Do you think it was always so? I mean, were your early yupo works looser? Both approaches are lovely...I'd be hard put to choose!

I've been catching up on posts I've missed - I so enjoy visiting here Sue, fresh and refreshing art and lovely words to think upon. Love both of these - each has a special quality of its own.

Love them both, but the colors are so vibrant on the Yupo! And the granulation of the color on the vase is wonderful!

Thanks, people!

Jeanette, I think Yupo still allows looseness, but I think I was just kind of rigid with what I did with it here.

Cathy, you're so kind. I've been busy and haven't had a lot of posting time, or painting time, for that matter! Fall is very busy for me.

Maria, thanks--I thought that granulation on the Yupo one was interesting, too! I love that stuff; I'm pretty much addicted to it!

Both are fresh and colorful, always what I strive for! I'm not a fan of Yupo. I think it's the impermanence. You always do a great job with it. Maybe I just need to use it more and get used to it.

I love Yupo and for some reason everyone I've talked to that has used it, has that same experience of loosening up. Maybe it is the impermanence of it that gives us, as artists that feeling of freedom when it's in front of us. Much like when we were little children and had no preconceived ideas of how things SHOULD be. I love it and think I'll pull mine out today. and I love how both your little vases turned out but the bottom one is my fave.

They're both lovely but that first one ... it has that yummy watery loose thing I LOVE!!! It soooo goes with the "essential character of things" quote, which I love by the way. And the Grandma Moses one cracks me up. It reminds me of my friend Evelyn (88) who says "buckle your shoes and get on with it!" So straightforward and to the point.

Hope you are doing well and you have your electricity back!

i love the colors in both. my question, which one did you do first. i think the painting done first regardless of paper is always the looser of the first two. when i do a second painting, for me, it is always tighter. i may get everything right in the second, but, then i like the first for its looseness. p.s. thank you for your kind words on my post.
